improve your life...get out of the smoke!

Most people think that in order to get a decent job in media sales, you have to be in Central London. There is however a wealth of outstanding media companies throughout the rest of the UK, operating across all disciplines- publishing, radio, exhibitions, new media and TV. Unfortunately, for those that want to work out of the smoke, it is often the case that is difficult to find these companies through conventional channels.

The media division of b³ recruitment was set up with the sole aim of servicing this large and important sector of the market.

Specialising within the media sales arena (although we do deal with marketing, production, circulation and editorial vacancies as well) ranging from graduate recruitment through to senior management appointments, we will provide you with a comprehensive, free and confidential service.

"When dealing with b3 recruitment, I have always felt understood and satisfied with the service. The recruitment agency has a different feel to it than most I have dealt with; they pay attention to detail and ensure that you feel like you have had the personal touch that some recruitment agencies don't offer.

I would definitely return to b3 in the future and know I would be getting a great service."

Cherisse Draper

"I have been working with b3 since the company started. During that time, every placement has been a success story. Not only do they take the time to get to know and understand their clients, but they always seem to find the perfect match without any time wasting. Having 3 media professionals on your side when you’re recruiting is a real bonus!

I wish them every success for the future."

Annette Cooper
Group Telesales Manager

"When I finished school I knew I wanted to work in Media sales but didn’t know how or where to start looking, but after seeing an advert in a local paper I spoke to b3 recruitment.

Now, after working on two magazines and three and half years later, I am working on a 500,000 plus readership, market leading weekly newspaper based in an industry that I have a huge passion for.

This has only been possible because of the unprecedented levels of guidance, support and personal advice that I have received from the boys at b3 recruitment from day one."

Andy Stevens
EMAP

"I just had to write to you to thank you for your help, co-operation and non-ageism(!) in respect of my new appointment as Group Sales Manager at dmg worldmedia.

As I mentioned to you during a telephone conversation, my experiences of recruitment agencies in recent times has not been good. It appears that the vast majority of them lose all interest in candidates as soon as they hear that you are over 25! I am delighted to say that your organisation are a most-welcome exception to the rule and that you look at each individual candidate on merit - not age.

The speed at which my appointment was confirmed was a credit to both you and my new employers.

Although I hope that I don't have occasion to use a recruitment consultancy again in the near future, should the situation arise you can be assured that you will be my first call.

Many thanks again for your help and I look forward to not speaking to you again for a long while!"

Does commuting really pay?

Traditionally there has always been a myth that, in order to get a decent job within the media industry, you have to work in London. Certainly, when I started out, if you didn't want to work in London you were considered to be non-career minded, but I never really wanted to do the commuting thing - who wants to be stuck on a train or in a car when you could be enjoying what life has to offer instead? (Something that may ring true with many of you following the recent hot spell) However, as society and working attitudes change, there seems to be a growing trend within both employees and employers to move away from the cities, and in some cases towns, in order to balance career with quality of life. The necessity to be based in London simply no longer exists. Since we set up business specialising in the 'out of Central London' market place, we have seen the number of candidates and clients steadily grow and, to be honest, we've read about the gloom and doom within media but haven't really experienced it ourselves.

So, I hear you muse, are the prospects still the same both in and out of the smoke for a prospective candidate? As a rule of thumb, yes. Generally salaries are very comparable to similar sized companies within London. However, if you are looking to earn six figures, then you'd probably be better off in Central London itself. The type of company is again very similar- on one hand there are major publishing houses employing 200 plus people and on the other there's companies employing only a handful of staff but never the less turning over tidy sums. Some offer excellent training, some don't. Some are expanding rapidly with ambitious plans that would make a lot of Central London publishers green, whereas some are doing the same thing they've done for the last 15 years and quite happy too, thank you very much.

Perhaps the only really major difference lies with company attitude. It's a lot less dog eat dog. Don't get me wrong- no one's so laid back that it affects business, it's just that business is done differently. There's a lot more carrot and a lot less stick. I'm never really sure what commuting costs- and I don't mean the price of a train ticket or a gallon of petrol. It's very subjective as to the value of gaining 10 hours+ per week- what would you do? Spend more time with the kids as they grow up? Take up a new hobby? Lie on the sofa and watch Neighbours? Sit in a nice beer garden and have a sun-downer whilst thinking of the car park better known as the M25? I do all four plus more.

You'll also find the attitude towards recruitment different. People are after quality of service as well as value for money. They want to be treated as humans and not just another possible commission cheque. Perhaps that's why we're still here and others aren't- we're all equal shareholders and whilst I would be lying if I said we didn't want to make money, we want to do it by building long term relationships with both candidates and clients, not just hitting short term goals.

There's a wealth of excellent media companies that will offer you the career you want 'out of the smoke' as well as an excellent quality of life. So, apart from the traffic to clear or the train to arrive, what are you waiting for?
